Dil Mohallay Ki Haveli
Review 11th
Hai yahan tanha akeli, dil mohallay ki haveli
A writer writes not because he is educated but because he is driven by the need to communicate. Behind the need to communicate is the need to share. Behind the need to share is the need to be understood. So finally aaj meny Amna Mufti k play k leay qalam utha he lia before going into my analysis about Amna Mufti and her play let me share what my friends says about her style and write ups.
Reema Ali Syed says “In my views..She is Pakistan`s Shakespeare (though this is kind of injustice with a writer in terms of comparing her work..But in terms of the way Shakespeare`s tragedies we all (who have read him) have found..dark, classy and captivating …This is exactly we can feel or see in Amna`s work..Amna Mufti`s writings (novels, short stories or now drama) are so mature, her way of dealing with the characters do not create “mess” it is instead of creating “vibes” which reader/viewer not only enjoy but at the same time feel the depth of the story..Pain of the characters..The themes she selects are very “ours” one can`t find them so “foreign”, she treats her stories and characters with true cultural, social values… Rational execution not so melodramatic…very real, sensible, mature and sensitive way of writings…What do I like the most about her writings is she has a ability to deliver so meaning full things with small, tiny lines, she does not need to give a speech on..!!”
Hasan Umar says “What I like about Amna Mufti’s writing is her maturity, the themes she chooses and the language she uses in her writings. Though I haven’t read much of her work but whatever I have read is definitely a masterpiece be it Aakhri Zamana, Jurrat-e-Rindana, Chaand Pokhar Tak Nahi Pohncha, Ulloo Baraye Farokht Nahi or others. What I like most is that themes of her writings are from our daily lives and one can closely associate himself/herself with the characters of the stories. I like the way she writes about our cultural and social values. What differs her from other writers is selection of pure language writing Urdu Literature which is not difficult to digest as many readers find it hard to understand pure literature but while reading Amna Mufti’s writings you can easily understand it. She doesn’t choose difficult words in her writings and that is what makes a reader comfortable.”
Sobia Saleem says “Amna Mufti is not only a writer she is a “story teller”…. she doesn’t create utopias… you will not find “Mr.Darcy” “Miss Elizabeth”… a match making romance ….. You will not find “one man show”…. it is real, it is deep, it is depressive and it is dejected indeed. The story is not a romance of one character… every character is there with each and every detail. Every character “evolves”. Every character contributes with full strength. She doesn’t create “white” or “black” characters….she tells us that most of the characters in our society are “GREY”. Her work is not a mere form of imagination but it is an open book of reality that reader reads, feels and then he lives with it for so many days even after finishing the book. You will not get a romantic ,warm feeling but the sharp end of reality make u awake, makes you even feel that you have so many “flaws” inside your own self. So, it is not like an escape from reality… not a utopia…it is like facing your own self, your own society in a mirror. Her emotions are not weak whether they are of love or hatred. The love rules the “logic”… the hatred rules the compassion.”
When we speak of a play as a comedy we generally mean a play which has a pleasant atmosphere and a happy ending. It may not actually make us laugh, but it must at least be amusing or entertaining. Black comedy or Dark comedy is so-called because of an element of cynicism and bitterness in it. Dil Mohallay Ki Haveli is a black comedy because of its hidden bitterness in it. It is a play rapped with mysteries and suspense, very strong and catchy plot, extremely powerful characters and apparently slow pace. I found Amna Mufti hard to get at first but once you get it you would love to read/watch it again and again. Language of Amna Mufti is really very tough, she talks about havelees and what makes them so mysterious. Servants play very important role in her writings, to portray reality sometimes she is so much bitter that you find hard to digest. She speaks via symbolism and body language; her characters do not allow you to forget them easily. She blends Punjabi with Urdu so beautifully that I fell in love with Punjabi language. If Jahez and Ullu Baraey Farokht Nahi are said to be her tragedies, Dil Mohallay Ki Haveli is for sure a dark comedy that has a magic in it. I do believe she is well aware of human psychology and the emotions she demonstrates in her paper are not merely words; they are alive within us, perfect human picture! She mocks so beautifully that one feels guilty to have such bad human traits in him/her. She shows mirror to society flawlessly and usually her write ups are social satire. Her romance is very natural and not of fairy tales thus committed to perfection
Let us start with episode eleven, we see that guy (missing name) gives Fahim tablets for relaxing muscles and Fahim mocks “din raat k is tasalsul mein insaan kitna bemaya hai.. In sab ko bhi asaabi sukoon ki golyan dy do” and “yeh koi dhanda thorha he hai jo main krta hun”, I found Sarmad Khoosat excellent excellent excellent J If he is said to be choosy in doing projects, he is justified. It is obvious that he is the only sane guy in this insane haveli. Bravo! I wonder what had happened to his wife, till now we have clues that she must be dead because of Amma Jaan’s lame objections and hardheartedness but still I want to know the whole story. I was so happy to see he saved Mehru and is determined to protect her now. I laughed out loud at his dialogue “yeh pagal tumhary Saad sy kahin zeada zimedar hai”
true that.

Every character keeps depth in it, be it land lady or Jammu. Amma Jaan is so engrossed in Jammu’s fake introduction that she is ready to object her old maid Wazeeran, her own sons and her bahu too. Blood has no value here, not in my society too. Question of the day is that who is “Ismat’s khandaan”? jo agar is haveli k raaz jaan jaey tou khoob hansengy. Preview of next episode has revealed two new women characters jo yaqeenan Ismat k khandaan sy taluq rakhti hongi.. Poor guess!
Azeem Myan bhi aik mystery thy jo k ab nhe rahay
Things are getting clear that Azeem sahib is Amma Jaan’s sbsy barha beta who did not study and wishes to have all control of Amma Jaan’s property. Mehnat sy jee churata hai aur nazar saari jaedaad py.. All clear! Sense of inferior complex is also there, Azeem is jealous of Saad, who was Amma Jaan’s chaheeta beta. This episode showed that Azeem succeeded in his plans and Amma Jaan literally throws Mehru and Saad out of Haveli. Waoww to Amma Jaan’s aqal!

Safia is kind of seedhi sadhi bahu and obedient wife. She is not aware of her husband’s cunning plans and is basically not a bad human being. Jammu takes sample of key on soap, I’m just waiting when he cheats Amma Jaan and mystery reveals. If I may guess, I’ve a strong feeling that Mehru has some connection with the girl jiski tasweer dekh k Amma Jaan roti hein. She does not know that the pillow she is having with her all the time as her mother’s (who was actually maid of this haveli) distinctive sign keeps expensive jewellery in it (and Jammu is after that). Bechari took all blame of chori on her own shoulders to get rid of all that mess. Saad sahib is back to his home again and I really wish this time he takes care of his health, surely going to miss Mehru. Rabia is missing haveli’s traditions and is not feeling well here in city. Allow me to say that phone call scene was too short and sounded somewhat bogus. It could have been done better

Samina Ahmed, Nadia Afgan, Sami Khan, Noor ul Hassan, Yumna Zaidi, girl playing Rabia’s role and guy playing Jammu’s character everybody has played outstanding performance. Confusing point is that kia Saad aur that guy who injects Fahim are brothers and adopted by Amma Jaan? I felt so while watching episode tenth. Please somebody make me clear.
Well, a token of thanks to DMKH team including performers, technical staff and director for giving this outstanding play and something to ponder upon seriously. Camera angles of this play are just surprising and appealing… Loving it! Before watching this play I had a belief that 80% credit of any play goes to writers because they are the ones who create what producers and directors need but after watching this, I had to change my opinion and I must confess that performers and direction is as much chief as script. Each dialogue is superb but here are some of my favourites from tonight’s episode:
Tum sy kis pagal ny kaha main pagal hun?
Aik bazari zindagi bhi ou guzar rha hun bazari chaeay ka kia..
Amma Jaan ko sirf aik pagal qabu kr skta hai!
Chorni o Chorni yeh tou btao Chorni!! Chor sy katti kyun ki?
Preview of next episode is so thrilling and reveals Azeem’s truth to Amman Jaan. I’m definitely waiting for next episode and this is official my favourite play on TV right now. I hope I am not disappointed!
